Render Unto God, Rambusch Company, First PC, Boise, Idaho

I am the Lord, and there is no other;
   besides me there is no god.
   I arm you, though you do not know me,
so that they may know, from the rising of the sun
   and from the west,
   that there is no one besides me;
   I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness,
   I make weal and create woe;
   I the Lord do all these things.
~Isaiah 45:5-7

Give to God what is God’s, and to Caesar what is Caesar’s… Jesus gives this response to adversaries who, in fact, do not agree on the division, but find commonality in their opposition to Jesus, in their desire to entrap and neutralize him, and, it seems, in their shared hypocrisy.

So Jesus answers the question—and doesn’t.

The moment, like our own, leaves much to be desired. Dual allegiance is always a fact of life. What do we owe, and to whom do we owe it? What shall we render in these fraught days? And in what and in whom does our hope and future lie?

Enter into worship.

Connections with Andrea

Prelude

If you have prayers you would like to share, please do so here. These will be shared by email to our St Andrew prayer list so that we pray for what you hold by name. This information is not shared online in a searchable form.

Gathering Song

Holy God,
you have made us in your image,
and we belong to you alone.
Therefore, we offer ourselves to you,
in service, love, and praise.
Use us for the glory of your realm
and the good of your people;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Praise

Reflect, Confess, be Assured

Send a text to a couple of people. Make a call. Who comes to mind for you? Wish them well. More than that, wish them the peace that comes with justice. Then click below.

Encounter the Word

Ground us, O Holy One, in the wisdom of Scripture
and in the living Word which is Christ Jesus.
Nourish us on the bread of his teachings
until we can taste your goodness.
Renew us at the fountain of his wisdom,
so we may find joy in obedience
and freedom in giving ourselves to you. Amen.

Isaiah 45:1-7 † Psalm 96:1-13 † 1 Thessalonians 1:1-10 † Matthew 22:15-22
*In the season after Pentecost (also known as Ordinary Time, or "Proper" Sundays, the first reading can follow one of two tracks—either a semi-continuous track that stays with a story over a number of Sundays or a paired track that companions more closely the gospel reading. This season we are mostly using the paired readings.

Psalm Response

Meditation

A text version of the sermon can be found here.

Give Thanks

If you haven’t already, set the elements—some bread, some juice or wine—in the room or space where you worship in these days with our faith community. Set a table with things that remind you of hope in this world and the world to come—something of God’s and “Caesar’s.”

If a joy or a concern has come to mind, please share it with the assembly here so you do not carry it alone. These will be shared by email to our St Andrew prayer list so that we pray for what you hold by name. This information is emailed to a curated group, not shared or posted online in a searchable form.

As we respond to God's grace and new life, consider those ways you can express gratitude, thanksgiving and blessing. And remember that we continue to keep our financial commitments to our mission partners and staff. Thank you for remembering to send in your financial pledges and offerings.
