For a thousand years in your sight are like yesterday when it is past …  You sweep them away; they are like a dream …
~Psalm 90:4,5a

Moses stands on the mountain looking down on the promised land. God speaks to him: Here it is: the land promised to your ancestors. You are on the brink of entering in…but not you.

As much as Moses’ story, his memory will live on, his journey stops on this side of the story. It is for others to go in and make the future God is giving to them.
Picture
Likewise, the church is called to live from one generation to the next for the sake of the world. As we mark the 503rd anniversary of the Protestant Reformation this week, this truth is just as urgent as it has ever been. Moses must pass the future to others, and so must we. There is danger and astonishing possibility in these fraught times, and our response to the moment, our investment in what is coming and what can be is all the more important. How can we who have guided the last generation make way for the one that is here now, burning with a Spirit of possibility, of reform, of service and healing? How can we who hold the levers of power within the institution hand them over faithfully—with courage and goodwill? And what is the work of those of us who are ready to take it on?

Render Unto God, Rambusch Company, First PC, Boise, Idaho

I am the Lord, and there is no other;
   besides me there is no god.
   I arm you, though you do not know me,
so that they may know, from the rising of the sun
   and from the west,
   that there is no one besides me;
   I am the Lord, and there is no other.
I form light and create darkness,
   I make weal and create woe;
   I the Lord do all these things.
~Isaiah 45:5-7

Give to God what is God’s, and to Caesar what is Caesar’s… Jesus gives this response to adversaries who, in fact, do not agree on the division, but find commonality in their opposition to Jesus, in their desire to entrap and neutralize him, and, it seems, in their shared hypocrisy.

So Jesus answers the question—and doesn’t.

The moment, like our own, leaves much to be desired. Dual allegiance is always a fact of life. What do we owe, and to whom do we owe it? What shall we render in these fraught days? And in what and in whom does our hope and future lie?

Finally beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me…
~ Philippians 4:8 - 9

There is power in these words and in the actions they call us to.  What good news this is! What welcome news given the times we are living through and the ways in which feelings of powerlessness can overtake us and can paralyze us.
Picture
At the same time, the liberation these words call us to is the work of a lifetime and it is the work of community. It takes courage and vulnerability to reject old harmful patterns and turn toward ways that are more just, more honorable. It takes truth-telling and good company to painstakingly discern the good from the bad, the useful from the distracting, the life-giving from the death-dealing. And it takes forgiveness and mutual aid to keep going—to give ourselves and each other the time and grace we need to learn and grow in the promise and the power of God.

So, be encouraged to look to the stars: those points of light that offer us glimpses of the kingdom. Rest at the tables set for us. And give thanks to God that in the hard work to which we are called and in the goodness that breaks in to guide and comfort us, we are ourselves becoming part of God’s nourishment and light for others. Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone…”.
~Matthew 21:42a

Do you remember the trouble the NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick got into back in 2016 when he and other players began to kneel during the National Anthem? It stirred up a hornet’s nest, led to all sorts of debate as to what is appropriate or not when it comes to protest and process of raising consciousness and spurring on social reform. If you’ve paid attention, you’ll know it has not gone well for Kaepernick, at least as far as his football career goes. Yet there has been a sea change in public opinion in just the last three or four years.

According to the 1966 Gallup survey, 63% of Americans disapproved not just of what Martin
