What are we to do?
Who are we to be?

Many of us hear
or feel God’s call
in different ways.
Moses heard the voice of God
in a burning bush.
And it was very unexpected.

What am I to do?
Who am I to be?
And who shall I say sent me?

What about us today?
We ask, “What can I do?”
We ask, “Who must I be?”

Jesus says to take up our cross
and follow him.
What does that mean?
How do we do that?

In this time of racial trauma
and unrest,
Covid 19 and economic tragedy,
fires and hurricanes and storms,
who are we to be
and how are we to be to be followers
of the Triune God?

When times are hard,is it different?
When times are hard,what are our disciplines;
what does discipleship look like?

Come, enter into worship.

Biblical faith, it seems, is as much about resilience and clarity in the crucible of threat as it is anything else. The Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah acted with nerve and cunning to disrupt Pharaoh's destructiveness and clear the path for deliverance. Peter rose to an occasion he did not see coming, naming with clear and sober judgment who Jesus was and in return discovering his own true identity.

Does fortitude and courage produce faithfulness? Or, do you suppose, is it the other way around?

Enter into worship. Persist. Discover and be discovered.

Nevertheless she persisted…

There are at least two important models for faith that Matthew brings to us in this week’s story. There is, of course, Jesus who listens, learns, and changes. Our tradition may find these to be unfamiliar actions for Jesus. Even more so as we examine more closely his initial prejudiced response to the Canaanite woman which leaves much to be desired.

And then there’s this woman. Persistent. Tenacious. Humble and strong. Her commitment to seek help for those who are powerless to do so themselves puts us on notice of what we are both called to do and capable of doing.

She does not slink away. She refuses to be silenced until her daughter is healed. What has she and what has Jesus to teach us of faith in this time?

You of little faith, why did you doubt? Do you not understand how connected all things are?

Listen again to that still small voice within, the same, the very same that spoke to Elijah in his moments of doubt.

So the apostle to the Romans offers a good word for us as well (Romans 10:6-7):
But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’”

Above and below are all here, the apostle explains (Romans 10:8):
“The word is near you,
on your lips and in your heart”

So the psalmist (Ps 85:10-11):
Steadfast love and faithfulness will meet;
righteousness and peace will kiss each other.
Faithfulness will spring up from the ground,
and righteousness will look down from the sky.

All is connected—the wind and the waves, the storm and the calm, the righteous One in it all. Enter into worship. Remember.

“Logos” by Mary Oliver
Why worry about the loaves and fishes?
If you say the right words, the wine expands.
If you say them with love
and the felt ferocity of that love
and the felt necessity of that love,
the fish explode into many.
Imagine him, speaking,
and don’t worry about what is reality,
or what is plain, or what is mysterious.
If you were there, it was all those things.
If you can imagine it, it is all those things.
Eat, drink, be happy.
Accept the miracle.
Accept, too, each spoken word
spoken with love.

Why worry? Well, we have many reasons we could cite. But the invitation here, echoed in Isaiah 55’s brilliant song and the direct example of Jesus in Matthew reminds us that others have been where we are and found a way.

What might we discover as we look to their wisdom? How might we be fed as we feed according to the example of Jesus?
