“As for the prophet who prophesies peace, when the word of that prophet comes true, then it will be known that the LORD has truly sent the prophet.”

We have often talked at St Andrew about our call to peace that necessarily runs through our joint work of compassion and justice. Any other type of peace is not just a falsehood, but an oppression. Voices are silenced and people suffer when we maintain a peace that is not grounded in the work of compassion and justice.

Enter into worship this Lord’s day with hope and thanksgiving. Worship forms us as a people who, with God’s help, magnify the capacity to be compassionate with ourselves and towards others, and seek justice for ourselves and for others. God welcomes all that we bring and all that we need and promises to be with us on this journey towards real peace.

For whenever I speak, I must cry out,
I must shout, “Violence and destruction!”

How different these words from Jeremiah sound in this day of Black Lives Matter and Defund the Police and Enough is Enough!

The prophet laments the lack of voices that speak out for God’s justice in the world. And, in the gospel, Christ reminds we who dare to be disciples: “nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.”

It is not too late to find our voice. Now is the time. This is the place. Enter into the hope that is worth shouting from our housetops.  As a rush of awareness shifts our political realities, we in the church who seek to act as Christ’s embodied presence in the world are suddenly struck by our own complacency, and yet, of the Spirit-led possibilities for newness in our own time.

Now is the time to seek justice. Now is the time to hold fast to the hope of salvation: “Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.” Enter in. Encounter the God who is justice and peace. Encounter the God who is all comfort.

“And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.”

The road to hope means hanging on together through anxiety, discomfort and uncertainty. It involves engaging challenge and disorientation together – together with each other and with the gifts of our tradition. You are invited to bring all that you carry to this worship space and to look for what it means to hang on together and live more      fully the hope to which we are called.

Bring what you need to be able to worship and remember.

It's important to note that the text video sections are each approximately 30 seconds long, which may or may not be enough time to read, so please be ready to pause the video at these times until you're finished reading (the space bar in most cases will pause and restart your video).

Finally, brothers and sisters, farewell. Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you. –2 Corinthians 13:11
If you rush to the end of this blessing, you can too easily give into that chronic and short-sighted original sin of the privileged: live in peace and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Peace is not an absence of conflict. It comes by way of justice. And as long as justice is denied, peace will be delayed. “Put things in order, listen to my appeal, agree with one another…” The apostle charts the way to peace here. It is filled with active verbs, with activity. It does not stand still. So let us together, in agreement, listening to this Word, move forward through worship.

How might you rightly engage today? Perhaps you’ll sense the need to resist being a passive “consumer” of worship. Engage your body as you remember the bodies of our black and brown siblings. Stand up for portions. Walk. Sing. Slow down. Listen. Taste and see. Commit. Then act. “The moving walkway of discrimination, prejudice and bigotry favors the racist and standing still places one in this jurisdiction of hatred.” So says Jason Campbell in a recent opinion piece. Faith is not passive. It moves. It acts. It amends. Set your space for worship. May the impatient God of love and peace be with you as you enter in.
