Worship Guide - Palm/Passion Sunday

Here we are, once again. Worship online—such an unfamiliar place for many of us. And the story that guides us is of a crowded scene—​noticeably lacking proper social distancing! How strange that suddenly feels. Shouts and chants, flying inflections and fomites of all sorts. And a story that, like ours, in this Holy Week, will have many ups and downs, many twists and turns before it ends. How will we be different once it is over?

If it helps, set a table for worship today. Keep it simple, but true. Some palms, or greens of any sort. Your favorite coat. Bread and cup. Stuff of the earth, like you. Gather round. Breathe deep. Light a candle. Enter in. Process like no one is watching! When it seems like the right time, pour some water. Feel it on your hands, note its song in your ears. Sing. Remember. Allow yourself to be drawn to one another and to the Holy One who draws near to you, to us, riding on a donkey.

As we prepare to worship, let's settle and listen and watch as Ali leads us.

Gathering Prayer

Holy God,
you reveal the truth about your people and the ways of our world
in the self-giving of the Son and his steadfast love.
Show us again the image of humility you desire for us,
and teach us obedience,
so that self-emptying may be our pathway to true life,
through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.

​Let your Word, O God,
break open our hearts this day
through the power of the Holy Spirit,
that we may enter into the coming Holy Week
