Reign of Christ, Year C

11/20/2022

[O]ur Saviour is our very mother in whom we be endlessly born, and never shall come out of him.
~Julian of Norwich, Revelations of Divine Love

Julian of Norwich, the 14th century mystic, could celebrate long before most male-dominated religious institutions that God, like God’s love, was broader and taller, deeper and higher, (Ephesians 3:18), simply fuller (3:19) than any of our ideas and ideals and limited imaginations could contain. Julian captures what this 13th century illumination also captures: God as both Son and birthing and nurturing Mother “in whom we are endlessly born,” the womb of all life and love. The world situated like a womb visualizes that declaration from Colossians 1:16: 16for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him.”

When we speak of this reign of Christ it is problematic because all other forms of power fail to measure up. Simply put, the real world ruins it for us. Yet to give ourselves to this claim is to aspire to partnering with God in the remaking of the world (and ourselves) in the image of this loving, creating, saving one. To live deeply and lovingly with this claim is to imagine the world turned upside down and our life together transformed.
